Psychological approach that emphasizes the role of unconscious processes and past experiences in shaping a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Developed by Sigmund Freud and later expanded upon by other psychologists such as Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, and Melanie Klein, psychodynamic theory posits that much of human behavior is determined by unconscious motivations and conflicts.

What is Psychodynamic ?

Psychodynamic theories focus on the psychological drives and forces within individuals that explain human behavior and personality. The theories originate from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, which focused on the unconscious mind as the source of psychological distress and dysfunction.

The psychodynamic approach includes all the theories in psychology that see human functioning based upon the interaction of drives and forces within the person, particularly the unconscious, and between the different structures of the personality.

Psychodynamic theory suggests that our past experiences, especially those from our early years, continue to influence us, often without us realizing it. These experiences create patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating that can persist into adulthood.

For example, the way we were treated by caregivers or the dynamics within our family can shape our beliefs about ourselves and others. These beliefs, formed early in life, can influence how we approach relationships, handle challenges, and perceive the world around us.

Sometimes, aspects of our experiences are too painful or difficult to face consciously, so our minds develop defense mechanisms to protect us. These defense mechanisms can include things like denial, repression, or projection. While they may have helped us cope at one time, they can also limit our ability to fully engage with our emotions and experiences in the present.

Our work together will involve exploring your personal history to uncover these underlying patterns and defense mechanisms. By shining a light on these unconscious dynamics, we can gain insight into why you might be experiencing certain challenges or repeating certain patterns in your life.
